Rouge. Why is she in the series?
Well. Several reasons.

1. Fanservice
2. To counterpart Knuckles in SA2 (this is the official reason that no one's buying anyway)
3. Female role model (Yup, that's what Sega is planning for the future of all eight year old girls idolizing Sonic girls)
4. Fetish Fuel
5. Femme Fatale: it spices up everything!

I can't say much since you pointed the main stuff out.

But I'm not as fond seeing her female "role model" in the series.
Plus she is rather...."suggestive" to put it in a non mature way.

But I rather put up with the gem lover than the whiney high pitched, sonic lover.

Master Hedgefox: Yeah Blaze is okay and all, but she's been put up as such an uninteeresting character by being from another dimension and all. IIT distances her.

Why must people hate on all the sonic characters? Rouge isn't that bad as an actual character.

She would be good IF it weren't for that there are no real good role model for girls. Boys have lots of choices, we girls have to go tran to get a good role model.
She'd also be a good character if it weren't for that there are probably a lot of her in Bond movies.
